Two Henrico Police officers received minor injuries during a fire at an Eastern Henrico motel Feb. 27.

The fire broke out in a vacant room at the Capitol Inn, 5400 Williamsburg Road across from Richmond International Airport, shortly before 9 p.m. The police officers were among the first to respond and were injured while assisting occupants of the hotel.

When the first of 10 Henrico Fire units arrived, they found fire and smoke coming from a first-floor room, with smoke and heat extending to adjacent rooms.

All occupants were evacuated safely. A total of 16 people staying in five rooms were displaced, and the motel staff provided housing to those people. Richmond Airport provided shuttle buses for the motel guests to gather during fire department operations.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office but is not believed to be suspicious in nature.
