'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign to target drunk-drivers

Police in Virginia and throughout the country will be targeting drunk drivers during the holidays as part of the semi-annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement effort.

More than 200 crashes in Virginia between Christmas Eve 2016 and New Year’s Day 2017 involved alcohol. Eight people were killed in these crashes and 135 were injured.

“The math is simple. Spending $10 on public transportation to get home safely is much cheaper than spending $10,000 on a DUI,” said Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Richard D.  Holcomb, the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative. “Virginia law enforcement officers are well trained to detect drunk drivers so don’t  put them to the test. They’ll be working on Christmas. They’ll be working on New Year’s. They’ll miss holiday celebrations with families and friends to keep our roads safe for everyone.

“Most drunk drivers who cause a fatal crash don’t go out thinking they’re going to kill someone that night. But, by getting behind the wheel while intoxicated, you’re making a conscious choice to put your life and the lives of many others at risk. Be smart and stay safe by planning ahead and selecting a sober ride home before you start drinking.”

All Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed Dec. 23-26 and Jan. 1-2.
