ELECTION 2023: Dillon to challenge Taylor for Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s seat

Table of Contents

Republican Shannon Dillon will challenge incumbent Democrat Shannon Taylor for the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s seat, after being named the Republican nominee for the seat.

Dillon previously sought the party’s nomination in 2015 but finished third in a three-way primary election behind Tony Pham (41%) and Jeff Everhart (40%) with about 19% of the vote.

Taylor has held the seat since 2012 and is seeking her fourth term.

Dillon is a former U.S. Navy JAG officer, special assistant U.S. attorney and criminal defense attorney.

"I'm running to restore dignity, competency, and accountability to the Office of Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney,” she said in a statement, adding that she would focus her efforts on addressing youth crime, gun violence in schools, drug-dealing, and what she termed a surge in violent crime impacting the community.

“As the Commonwealth’s Attorney I will not focus on social issues or seek to make examples out of law enforcement,” she said. “I pledge to promote and restore a positive relationship between the community and our law enforcement partners. I will hold my staff to an extremely high standard of accountability.”

Dillon pledged to work with community members, schools, victims and their families, as well as the judiciary system, the defense bar, law enforcement and the General Assembly “to combat the crime that is plaguing our communities.”

Editor's note: A previous version of this article incorrectly suggested that Dillon had withdrawn from a Republican Party primary for the position in 2019. In fact, Dillon was not a candidate that year. The information was sourced from an inaccurate entry on the Virginia Public Access Project's website. The Citizen regrets the error.
