A child in Central Virginia has died from complications of a chronic health condition and COVID-19, Virginia Department of Health officials announced Thursday. The agency provided no further details about the child.

It was the first reported death in a child younger than 10 years old with COVID-19 in the state.

“Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the family and friends of this child,” said State Health Commissioner M. Norman Oliver. “While fewer cases of COVID-19 are reported in children compared with adults, children are not immune to the disease.

Nationally, more than 80 deaths of children 5 and younger have been attributed wholly or partially to COVID-19, and more than 180 deaths among those 5 to 17 years old have been attributed similarly.
