The Henrico County Public Schools division reported its highest single-week increase in COVID-19 cases last week.

Between Nov. 29 and Dec. 3 — the first week back in school after Thanksgiving break — HCPS reported 134 new positive cases.

Overall in Henrico County, the average number of new daily COVID-19 cases has nearly doubled since the day before Thanksgiving, according to Virginia Department of Health data.

"As you would expect, when our community transmission is high, we see this same trend in our school data," said HCPS spokeswoman Eileen Cox.

HCPS now has reported 1,369 cases in the division’s buildings since Sept. 1 — 723 in elementary schools, 283 in middle schools, 336 in high schools and 27 in various annexes. There are about 48,000 in-person students and about 7,000 staff members in HCPS, according to the most recent estimates provided by the school district.

The highest numbers in elementary schools last week were at Longdale Elementary, which reported five new cases and 62 exposures resulting from those cases. Division-wide, elementary schools reported 75 new positive cases and 290 exposures.

Henrico middle schools reported 25 new COVID-19 cases along with 203 close contacts last week. Tuckahoe Middle had the highest numbers for the week with six cases and 68 exposures.

High schools reported 30 positive cases and 283 exposures last week. At Godwin High, seven cases resulted in 76 close contacts, according to the dashboard.

HCPS’ Central Office, also known as the school administration building, reported two new cases and two close contracts last week while the facilities department reported two cases and one exposure.

Chief of Staff Beth Teigen will present an update from the health committee Dec. 9 at the Henrico School Board work session. The biweekly updates typically include information regarding COVID-19 testing, vaccinations and any new updates to HCPS health protocols.
