Continuing unemployment claims in Henrico drop for fifth straight week

Initial unemployment claims in Henrico during the most recent reporting week rose slightly but remained relatively stable for the fifth straight week, while the number of people filing continuing claims dropped by more than 600 people.

It was the fifth straight week that continuing claims in the county have declined – from 10,477 during the week that ended Aug. 15 to 7,252 during the most recent reporting week, which ended Sept. 19. That total peaked in Henrico at 16,005 during the week that ended May 23.

A total of 278 Henricoans filed first-time unemployment claims during the most recent week, up from 263 the previous week. That was the seventh-highest total statewide.

Overall, nearly 40,000 Henrico citizens have filed initial claims at some point during the pandemic, the eighth-highest total of any locality in the state. (Chesterfield County is seventh, with just more than 40,000, while Richmond is fourth with more than 48,000.)
