First Tee of Greater Richmond yesterday begin construction work at Belmont Golf Course, where it and developer Love Golf Design are remaking the course from a traditional 18-hole layout to a 12-hole championship-style set up.

It’s part of a 20-year, $3.25-million lease agreement between First Tee and Henrico County, through which First Tee has assumed management and operation of the course. The organization promises an affordable public facility for all ages and skill levels. Other changes will include the addition of a driving range, a short-game practice area, a six-hole short course, a putting course and an improved pro shop and clubhouse.

The course will be closed all year and is expected to reopen in May of 2021.

Reaction to the plans was mixed when county officials announced them several months ago. A number of people in the community expressed optimism about them, but some Lakeside residents are upset because they wanted the course to retain its traditional 18-hole layout.
