Henrico-based Commonwealth Catholic Charities has received a $50,000 grant from Truist Financial Corporation to provide hunger and financial relief to 2,100 low-income residents and seniors in the Richmond and Hampton Roads regions.

The grant is part of the financial services company’s Truist Cares initiative, a $25 million philanthropic pledge announced in March to support basic needs, medical supplies and financial hardship relief due to COVID-19.

“We are providing critical food supplies to families with school-aged children who no longer have access to free and reduced cost meals,” said Jay Brown, CCC’s CEO. “As we deliver groceries and leave them at the door of our senior clients, we are decreasing the chance of exposure to coronavirus for our most vulnerable neighbors. It’s vital that we continue delivering healthy groceries to individuals who may otherwise be unable to obtain them due to financial and/or physical limitations.”

Through direct financial assistance, CCC hopes to divert low-income families away from possible eviction and foreclosure.

“We are committed to investing in every household’s financial stability, and providing a safety net for those who need it most during the current crisis,” said Brown.

Truist Virginia-East President Dan O’Neill said CCC’s mission aligned with his company’s vision.

“Our purpose at Truist is to build better lives and communities, and we are thankful for the important work [CCC does] throughout Virginia, but especially so during this challenging time for families and children,” he said.
