Henrico Citizen Managing Editor Patty Kruszewski won two awards in the Virginia Professional Communicators 2024 communications contest, including a first-place entry that advanced to the National Federation of Press Women competition.

Awards were announced at the VPC spring conference, held April 20 at the Library of Virginia.

Kruszewski won a first place award in the personal opinion category with her column, A Night with Chef Paul, about her daughter's unforgettable evening cooking alongside the late, great Paul Elbling.

She also earned an honorary mention in the specialty articles environmental category, with One Place to Tell So Many Different Stories, about the Varina LandLab.

Among other VPC members to win honors were Joan Tupponce of Glen Allen, Karen Schwartzkopf of Henrico and University of Richmond student Ananya Chetia. Tupponce won four first places, three second places, a third place and two honorable mentions, while Schwartzkopf won a first place and a third place.

Chetia earned a second place for her news story about the business of college sports and gender-based wage gaps for head coaches.

All first-place entries will advance to the national competition; winners will be announced at the June NFPW conference in St. Louis.
