Charles City Road overpass in Varina reopens

The Charles City Road bridge over I-295 in Varina has reopened to vehicles following completion of inspections by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Inspectors determined the overpass sustained no structural damage during a Feb. 26 fire caused by a tractor trailer crash and is safe for all traffic.

The previously closed section of Charles City Road between Beulah and Turner roads has reopened as well.

“We realize that the closures on I-295 and Charles City Road have been inconvenient for drivers, and thank them for their patience this week” said acting Richmond District Maintenance Administrator Stephen Fritton. “We’re also thankful to our structure and bridge, materials and research teams that worked to quickly evaluate and reopen I-295 and the bridge. Additionally, Henrico County has been a helpful partner in reopening the road this morning.”
