Cashwell outlines potential budget cuts in email to employees

Table of Contents

In an email to Henrico Schools employees this afternoon, Superintendent Amy Cashwell identified areas school officials are considering for spending reductions in order to close an $8 million funding gap identified by County Manager John Vithoulkas in his revised budget.

Among those areas that could see funding reductions:
• textbook, tech books and other instructional supplies;
• travel and other costs associated with professional learning;
• the county's fuel budget (lowered potentially by $1 million).

Areas for which funding could be eliminated:
• school bus replacement;
• several new capital improvement projects;
• reserve funding for furniture, school technology and band equipment;
• operating costs across multiple departments.

The county's general government will need to close an additional gap of $4.8 million and is considering a variety of ways to achieve that, including possible job cuts as a last resort.
