Cashwell: Most Henrico students will advance to next grade level

Most Henrico public school students will advance to the next grade level – or graduate – according to a plan announced yesterday by Henrico Schools Superintendent Amy Cashwell.

Cashwell and her staff decided to close the graded portion of the school year March 13 – the last day that school was held in person. That means that most students will be evaluated based upon their graded work through that date and most will be advanced to the next grade level.

At the elementary school level, students generally will be advanced to the next grade level, unless they were being considered for retention at their existing grade level before schools closed. Students in consideration for being held back must have been labeled as such on their interim reports for Marking Period 3, Cashwell wrote in an email to parents. During what would have been the rest of the school year, through early June, students and families will be provided with optional review and enrichment opportunities for previously taught materials, Cashwell wrote.

Teachers will post all final grades by May 1.

At the middle school and high school level, students generally will move up to the next grade level as well. High school students who were on track to graduate will hear from school officials by phone email, mail and/or Schoolology after next week, which originally was scheduled to be Spring Break.

Middle school and high school students who want to improve their third-quarter grades will have an opportunity to do so between April 14 and 24, Cashwell said. Any additional work that students choose to complete this month only will count toward their final grades in a positive way, she said, and won’t lower their existing grades.

Middle and high school students’ current grades will be posted online by this Friday so that they can decide how they’d like to process. Final grades will be posted by May 1.

For yearlong classes, students’ final grades will be determined by weighing each of the three marking periods equally. For semester courses, students will receive the grade they had earned as of March 13, unless they choose to complete additional work between April 14-24.

For any adult education classes that hadn’t yet started, teachers won’t be paid and refunds will be mailed to students who already had paid. For classes that had begun, teachers will be paid based upon March payroll and refunds will be provided to students in classes that hadn’t yet finished.
