Beginning March 4, 29,000 public elementary school students across Virginia, including some students from Henrico County, will begin reading the same book as part of the Virginia Reads One Book program. The program is designed to strengthen the educational connection between home and school. The Virginia Bankers Association Education Foundation and 21 banks across Virginia are sponsoring nearly half of the schools participating in the program, at 38 Title 1 elementary schools. This $120,000 commitment will support more than 15,000 participants. Each student will receive a copy of “Judy Moody was in a Mood” by Megan McDonald. The reading schedule will take about 15 minutes each night, which puts all the participating schools literally on the same page. Teachers will augment the reading with classroom activities, trivia contests, prizes and fun opportunities for family engagement.
