Woody and Nelsen funeral homes are again offering families the opportunity to exchange their old, torn or soiled American flag for a new three-foot by five-foot flag. In exchange, the retired flag will be given proper disposal in accordance with the United States Flag Code. The Flag Code, which suggests that the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Today, nearly 90 years since the Flag Code was originally written, there are localities that have laws prohibiting burning. Additionally, the fabrics used to make flags are now mostly synthetic fabrics and have the potential of giving off toxic fumes when burned. Last year, the program exchanged over 600 flags, which were delivered to the Virginia War Memorial for proper disposal. Citizens can exchange their flags for free in Henrico County at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, and Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue.
