Brookland District Supervisor Dan Schmitt has formally announced his intention to seek re-election to the seat this year.

Schmitt, a Republican, initially won a special election in 2018 to serve the remainder of the term of former supervisor Courtney Lynch, a Democrat who herself had served only about seven months after winning a special election in November 2017 to fill the remaining portion of longtime Republican supervisor Dick Glover’s seat after his death that February.

Schmitt subsequently was re-elected to his first full term in 2019. He will face at least one challenger in the November general election; Democrat Stephen Rast, a civil engineer who works for the Henrico County Department of Public Works, is seeking his party’s nomination for the seat.

"From the beginning, my vision has been to make Brookland a better place while bringing people together and celebrating our collective good in order to strengthen our community and embolden our future,” Schmitt said in a statement. “We have achieved so much together already, and I am eager to continue this progress, on behalf of our community, over the next four years."

Schmitt cited a desire to continue his focus on creating access to amenities throughout the district, helping fund improvements to local schools, boosting bikeability and walkability in the region, and working to ensure strong fiscal stewardship within county government as his primary goals.

Schmitt lives with his wife and two children in Glen Allen.
