Blue Bell Ice Cream back in stores today

Blue Bell Ice Cream is back in Metro Richmond, following an absence of several years after a listeria outbreak in 2015.

The popular Texas-based ice cream company recently completed construction of a 14,000-square-foot distribution facility in Ashland.

Blue Bell products will be available locally at Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Walgreens, military commissaries and many independent grocery stores. The company offers more than 40 flavors, including Homemade Vanilla, which company officials say is its best-seller.

“We are glad to be back and excited to be in a position to expand our sales territory,” said Jimmy Lawhorn, vice president, sales and marketing for Blue Bell. “Our delivery trucks arrived a few weeks ago. As soon as fans saw the Blue Bell logo they began contacting us wanting to know when they can expect to find our ice cream in stores. We are extremely thankful for the warm response from so many of them.”

The Ashland distribution site will employ about 20 people, Lawhorn said. A second distribution facility will open in Suffolk in April and employ the same number of people, he said.
