The Richmond Black Widows, the first women’s tackle football team in the region and Virginia’s longest running women’s football team, will have a new coaching staff as they enter their fifth season next year, team owner Sarah Schkeeper announced this week.

The team also will hold tryouts for the season Aug. 17, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19 at Tuckahoe Middle School at 8:30 a.m. each day.

"After last season we realized we needed to do a reset of a few things and our first priority was coaching,” said Schkeeper. “To that effort, we have sought out coaches who are committed to building our program in all facets, as well as building up the future of women’s football.”

Coaching veteran Marlow Jones will serve as the team's head coach, while Marcus Stallings, a former player who has coached women's football previously, will be the offensive coordinator. Duane Phillips, a former player with extensive coaching experience, has returned as defensive coordinator. Marlene Davis (assistant coach) and Desiree Edmondson (player and participant in a coaching mentorship) also will serve on the staff.

The Black Widows also announced a partnership with CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation, which works to help families of children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses through meals and financial assistance.
