Black Lives Matter 804, Urban League Young Professionals to hold march in Henrico's West End June 5

Black Lives Matter 804 and Urban League of Greater Richmond Young Professionals will hold a Community Walk for Justice Saturday, June 5, from noon to 4 p.m., according to event organizers from the two groups.

Members of Coming to the Table RVA also will join and support the walk, which will begin at J.R. Tucker High School, 2910 Parham Road, and proceed to the Henrico Police Department and back (about 1.2 miles each way).

The march is designed to verbalize and show support for a set of six priorities that the organizations want law enforcement agencies and local government to implement. They include:

• adopting the BREATHE Act, proposed legislation put forth by the Electoral Justice Project of the Movement for Black Lives, which would reallocate funding from police agencies to mental health officials, counselors and other interventionists who could respond to domestic-violence situations instead of police;

• establishing a federal commission to study the legacy of slavery in the United States and the ongoing harm it caused;

• repealing marijuana prohibitions and funding reparations for those arrested and charged for drug offenses in the past;

• ending qualified immunity for police officers;

• freeing people wrongfully convicted;

• establishing civilian review boards.

Speakers will include Richmond poet laureate Roscoe Burnems and singer/songwriter Teshia LeSane; guided healing meditation will be provided by Jabriel Husan.

Organizers of Saturday’s event are seeking volunteers and financial donations to support it.
