Belmont to host 1940s-era scramble, other events to commemorate 75th anniversary of Snead's victory

Belmont Golf Course in Lakeside will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Sam Snead's victory there in 1949 PGA Championship with a throwback event May 31. The tournament, which was played at the course then known as Hermitage Country Club, remains the only major golf championship played in the state of Virginia. Snead defeated Johnny Palmer 3 and 2 in the 36-hole match play final. The victory gave Snead the first two legs of golf's grand slam, following his Master win in April.

The 75th anniversary celebration will kick off a day earlier, on May 30, with greens fees reduced to $19.49.

The next day, golfers at the course will have a chance to hit clubs similar to those used by Snead, as part of a four-person scramble. Each group will have a set of 1940s clubs and balls. Awards will be given to the best-dressed golfers, as well as to the winning team. The cost is $65 per person or $250 for a foursome.

Young visitors also will be able to get involved with the festivities by playing Little Bell, Belmont's par-3 course, free of charge between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. All youngsters who do so will receive a complimentary "Belmont 1949" ball. Parents and guardians are encouraged to join their children on Little Bell, although they will not receive the retro clubs or balls on the par-3 course.
