The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the Richmond region is $3.89 today – down 12 cents from last Monday and below $4 for the first time in three months, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Statewide, the average cost per gallon is $3.99 (down 14 cents from last Monday).

One month ago, drivers in Metro Richmond were paying an average of $4.63 per gallon, according to AAA.

The last time the cost of an unleaded gallon was below $4 in the state was April 29, the agency reported. The state set an all-time record high price of $4.86 per gallon June 14.

But even with the price drops during recent weeks, today's state average is $1.02 more expensive than this day one year ago, AAA reported.

Gas prices in the Richmond region and Virginia overall are lower than the national average, which fell to $4.21 per gallon (down 14 cents from last Monday). But a slight uptick in gas demand as more people fuel up could end the steady drop in daily pump prices, according to AAA officials.

“We know that most American drivers have made significant changes in their driving habits to cope with high gas prices,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Morgan Dean. “But with gas below $4 a gallon at nearly half of the gas stations around the country, it’s possible that gas demand could rise.”
