Steven Alker closed with three birdies on the final four holes to win a highly competitive Dominion Energy Charity Classic golf tournament at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course in Henrico Oct. 23.

Alker, a 51-year-old native of New Zealand, has been dominant all year on the PGA Tour Champions (the PGA’s senior tour, for players 50 and older). He finished the regular season schedule in first place before claiming this weekend’s tournament – the first of three playoff events to conclude the tour’s season.

The three-day DECC concluded in damp, misty, chilly conditions but certainly didn’t lack intrigue.

As many as seven golfers were within a shot of the lead with just a few holes remaining for the threesome in which Alker was playing, which also included American Jerry Kelly (who held the lead most of the tournament) and Padraig Harrington, of Ireland. Those two finished at 12 under par as part of a three-way tie for fifth with American Doug Barron, two shots behind Alker.

South Korean golfer KJ Choi was second at 13 under par.

Alker was a shot behind the leaders before he ran off three straight birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes Sunday to surge ahead.

The DECC featured the top 72 players on the tour. In two weeks, the TimberTech Championship in Boca Raton, Florida will include just the top 54 remaining players, according to season points totals. Then, the top 36 will play the final event in Phoenix, Arizona – the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
