After Tropical Storm Helene, VDH urges people to stay away from natural bodies of water

Table of Contents

Pet, livestock and wildlife wastes, and untreated wastewater from sewage treatment plants that are overloaded by an excess of rainwater can all end up in natural waters used for recreation and pose risks to human health, according to the agency.

In general, Virginians should avoid entering natural bodies of water for at least three days after significant rain events, according to the VDH.

Other tips from the agency:

• don't swallow untreated water;

• don't swim if your skin has open cuts or wounds;

• if you come into contact with natural bodies of water during this timeframe, bathe to wash off possible germs and contaminants;

• if taking fish caught from natural waters, remove the skin from filets, dispose of viscera and internal organs, and cook filets to proper temperatures.

VDH’s Call Center is available to answer questions at 877-829-4682 (Option 2), Monday through Friday (except on holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For details about recreational water safety, click here.
