After bus breaks down, Henrico firefighters give Roanoke students memorable pit stop

Students from Roanoke's Crystal Springs Elementary School didn't expect to be visiting with Henrico firefighters Friday, but they also didn't expect their bus to break down in the county.

The students were on their way to a school field trip in Jamestown, but their bus began to have trouble on I-295. It eventually broke down at the intersection of Airport Drive and Washington Street in Highland Springs – just feet from Fire Station No. 3.

After Henrico Police blocked one lane of traffic to protect the bus, which was jutting out into the road, firefighters from the station took all 50 students and their teachers and chaperones to the station, where they were able to use the restroom and spend some energy.

With a replacement bus an hour away, firefighters set up a fire prevention show, took the students on a tour of the station and the fire engines and let them use some of their thermal cameras.

Once the new bus arrived, the group was on its way to Jamestown for part two of its unexpected two-part field trip.
