Academy Sports + Outdoors plans first Virginia store in Short Pump

There soon will be a new tenant at the former Toys “R” Us store in Short Pump.
Academy Sports + Outdoors has leased the 58,075-square space at The Corner at Short Pump with plans to open its first Virginia store there. The space is located at West Broad Street and Lauderdale Drive.
Academy Sports + Outdoors, headquartered in Katy, Texas, is one of the nation's largest sporting goods and outdoor stores. The company operates 259 stores in 16 southern and midwestern states. The closest stores to Virginia are the company’s 14 in North Carolina.
The company offers a wide assortment of hunting, fishing, camping equipment, and gear, sports and leisure products, footwear and apparel, among many other items. It is a competitor of Cabela’s, which has a Short Pump location just a few miles west of the new Academy Sports location, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, which has three Henrico locations, including one at Short Pump Town Center, across from Academy’s new spot.
Academy Sports’ sales reached $1 billion in 2003, $2 billion in 2007, $3 billion in 2012, and $4 billion in 2014. In fiscal 2021, sales exceeded $6.77 billion.
