About 2 percent of Henrico's population now has been tested

Henrico’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases had reached nearly 1,200 as of Friday morning, with one new death attributed to the virus bringing the county’s total to 113. All but 16 deaths have occurred among residents of long-term care facilities in the county.

The Virginia Department of Health this week restored to its online database testing information that shows how many tests have been conducted among Henrico residents; to date, that number is 6,852, meaning that about 17.5 percent of them have returned positive.

But in the past seven days, the positivity rate is lower – 12.4 percent.

Both sets of numbers include PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) testing only and not the antibody testing that state officials this week were criticized for having included in testing totals until recently. (PCR tests detect the presence of the virus, while antibody tests detect the body’s immune response to it, indicating that a person already has been infected.)

Slightly more than 2 percent of Henrico’s population now has been tested; the county ranks fifth in the state in the number of tests administered, trailing Fairfax County, Prince William County, Virginia Beach and Chesterfield County.

On average during the past week, slightly more than 200 tests have been administered to county residents each day, according to the VDH.

There are 15 known outbreaks in Henrico; all but two occurred at long-term care facilities, while those two occurred elsewhere in the community. In all, 502 cases (or about 42 percent of Henrico’s total) are associated with those outbreaks.

The total number of confirmed cases among county residents in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s is relatively similar, with each age group having experienced between 142 and 165 confirmed cases. Among those 80 and older, there have been 234 cases.

But the virus, not surprisingly, is killing primarily older victims; 88 of the 113 deaths have occurred among people 70 and older. Only five have occured among those in their 50s.

Sixty deaths have occurred among whites and 49 among blacks. The race of three others is unknown.

Of the 169 Henricoans hospitalized by the virus, only 27 have been younger than 50.
