The AARP Fraud Watch Network is warning people of these scams. The scammers typically claim to work for a utility company and tell their customers they haven't been paying their bill and their service will be cut off if they don't make a payment immediately. If you receive a surprise call like this, AARP Fraud Watch Network officials urge you to hang up the phone immediately and contact your utility company using the customer service number on a recent bill or log into its website or app to check your balance.

If you recognize a scam, you can report it to local law enforcement (in Henrico, 804-501-5000). For details, visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network website at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork.
