AARP: Medicare enrollment season also brings fraud, scam attempts

Table of Contents

As Medicare open enrollment season gets underway, AARP is warning seniors about the potential for fraud. Criminals often take advantage of this time to deceive beneficiaries with scams promising free gifts or limited-time offers. These scams aim to steal money, Medicare information, or even identities.

AARP warns against responding to unsolicited Medicare plan contacts. Legitimate providers only will reach out if you have requested information or have an existing relationship.

To safely compare plans and make changes during open enrollment, which runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, beneficiaries can visit medicare.gov or call 800-633-4227.

AARP, which represents more than one million Virginians ages 50 and older, offers a free resource called the AARP Fraud Watch Network to help combat scams. Call 877-908-3360 or visit aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork to speak with a fraud specialist.
