If not for the COVID-19 pandemic, the Highland Springs High School football team – a perennial power in the region and state – would have been facing another state power, Oscar Smith High School of Chesapeake, Sept. 4.

Instead, the Springers and all other Virginia high school football teams are at home, their seasons at best delayed until spring by the pandemic and the Virginia High School League.

Highland Springs Coach Loren Johnson sat down with the Citizen to discuss the program, what it’s like to have a fall without football and how his team will spend the next few months away from the field.
