A 2022 first: Henrico sees consecutive days with fewer than 500 new COVID-19 cases apiece

Table of Contents

For the first time in 2022, Henrico County has witnessed consecutive days with fewer than 500 new confirmed COVID-19 cases apiece. The county is averaging 637 new daily cases during the past week (down from a peak of 700 Jan. 12), following back-to-back days with 469 and 453 new cases, respectively, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Official case counts generally are becoming less significant, since the explosion of at-home testing means many cases are never reported to the state. But the official numbers generally are believed to reflect overall community trends, and the recent downward trend could be the first signal that the Omicron wave of the virus has peaked locally.

The county witnessed just two new virus-related hospitalizations during the weekend and has seen only five COVID-related deaths so far this year.

Just more than 74% of Henrico’s population has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, about 67% of county residents are fully vaccinated, and about 38% of adults in the county (18 and older) have received a booster shot, according to the VDH.
