Six Henrico County Public Schools educators received the 2024 REB Award for Teaching Excellence. The award, which includes a grant from $10,000-$15,000, recognizes Richmond-area teachers who demonstrate inspiring classroom instruction. The Community Foundation awards the grants to support teachers who have distinguished themselves.
The HCPS winners, selected from a pool of 85 educators regionally nominated by students, parents and colleagues, are:
• Ryan Conway, Glen Allen High School: $14,900 to study innovative teaching strategies in Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.
• Kionna Bobbitt, Highland Springs Elementary School: $15,000 to pursue a certification in culturally responsive leadership and attend the K-12 Innovative Schools Summit.
• Elizabeth Broda, Henrico High School: $13,700 to study community-building practices in Hawaii rooted in Native Hawaiian culture.
• Yvette Lee of J.R. Tucker High School: $15,000 to explore design thinking, web development, and information technology initiatives in England and Tanzania.
• Kendra Thomas, Hungary Creek Middle School: $10,300 to research writing instruction and support programs for students with dyslexia and to travel in New England to research cross-curricular middle school lessons about watersheds and Native American history.
• Jason Abril, Douglas S. Freeman High School: $10,000 to travel through southern France to explore the connection between memory and essay-writing.
An additional HCPS teacher, Donna Letson of Twin Hickory Elementary School, was named a finalist and received a $1,000 award.
In total, 18 winners and 14 finalists were selected from the regional nominees. The selection process consists of the nomination, an interview, and a project proposal submission.
