5 Henrico teachers named finalists for HCPS Teacher of the Year

Five Henrico County Public Schools teachers – one from each of the county's magisterial districts – have been named finalists for the HCPS Teacher of the Year award, the school district announced Thursday. The finalists were chosen from their respective schools by their peers.

Finalists include :

• Christine Suders, Hermitage High School English teacher (Brookland District);
• Audra Vanderland, Glen Lea Elementary School librarian (Fairfield District);
• Adria Bader, J.R. Tucker High School English teacher (Three Chopt District);
• Audra Callahan, Maybeury Elementary School music teacher (Tuckahoe District);
• Sekani Grant, Elko Middle School social studies teacher (Varina District).

The teachers "exemplify the passion, high standards and meaningful engagement that are the hallmarks of public education," said HCPS Superintendent Amy Cashwell.

The winner of the award will be announced before the school system's winter break and will be honored, along with the nominees and finalists, at a banquet in the spring.

Jennie Por, a teacher of preschool and early childhood education at the Advanced Career Education Center in Highland Springs, was recognized as last year's HCPS Teacher of the Year.
