4 Henrico students earn honors in state science and engineering fair

Four high school students from Henrico County received honors in the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair in April.

More than 200 students from across the commonwealth competed in the fair, held online because of COVID-19. The event was hosted by the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Mrunal Kute from Mills E. Godwin High School won third place in the animal sciences category for “Observing Different Concentrations of Ginkgo Biloba on Danio rerio Memory Development.”

David Kang from JR Tucker High School received an honorable mention in the microbiology category for “Investigation of Novel Tryptophan Derivatives from the Human Gut Microbiome on Cancer Cells and Pathogenic Bacteria: Identifying Novel Endogenous candi.”

Gwyneth Liu of Godwin High School won third place in the systems software and intelligent machines category for “Automatic Diagnosis of Malignant Skin Lesions using a Deep Convolutional Neural Network.”

Student participants also were eligible for a number of special awards, given by sponsors and organizations.

Philip Naveen from Mills E. Godwin High School was awarded a certificate of outstanding research from the American Psychological Association in the category of behavioral and social sciences.
