Three separate shootings in Henrico County three miles apart during a 5-hour period May 19 left a Henrico High School student and a 24-year-old man dead and a residence damaged.

Henrico Police do not believe the shootings are related, Police Lt. Matt Pecka told the Citizen Friday.

The first shooting happened sometime before 4 p.m. in the 2700 block of Byron Street in the Glenwood Farms community, near the Laburnum Avenue-Mechanicsville Turnpike intersection. It injured the teen, later identified by community members and Henrico High School officials as Diamond Brown-Mosby, a student at the school.

Someone attempted to drive Brown-Mosby to the hospital but stopped just after 4 p.m. on I-64 westbound on the Shockoe Valley Bridge, near mile marker 191, to summon the assistance of a Virginia State Trooper who was already stopped there to assist another motorist. The officer and VDOT Safety Service Patrol official rendered aid until Brown-Mosby could be transported to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The trooper along with VDOT Safety Service Patrol aided the victim while emergency personnel responded to the scene, police said. Brown was taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police are investigating her death as a homicide and Friday afternoon announced they had taken a juvenile suspect into custody in connection with the shooting. The juvenile is being held at the Henrico County Juvenile Detention Home on murder and attempted robbery charges. Police are asking anyone in the Glenwood Farms community who saw or heard anything, or who may know something about the shooting, to contact metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or Henrico Police Detective Seay at (804) 501-7323, or use the P3 Tips mobile app.

The second shooting took place in the 2000 block of Eagle Trace Terrace – about one mile north of the first shooting – at about 8 p.m. Police arrived to find that an occupied house had been struck by multiple times by gunfire. No one inside was injured, however. Anyone with information about the shooting also should call Crime Stoppers or use the P3 Tips app.

The third shooting took place in the 3800 block of Delmont Street, across from Richmond Raceway and about 2.7 miles from the first shooting, at about 9:30 p.m. Officers arrived to learn that 24-year-old Deonte’ Deron Price of Henrico had been shot and taken to VCU Medical Center in a private vehicle. He later died. Officers at the scene found multiple cartridge casings and multiple parked vehicles struck by gunfire.

Anyone with information about the homicide should call Crime Stoppers.

Brown-Mosby, the Henrico High School student, was a senior and member of the school’s varsity girls’ basketball team. The team’s Twitter account posted a photo of her Friday with the message “She will be missed. She had a heart of gold!! RIP to our “Diamond” Brown!! Prayers to her family and our Henrico family!!”

“Diamond was a kind young woman and a talented student athlete,” Henrico High School Principal Karin Castillo-Rose wrote in a message to families and staff on Friday morning. “Her loss will be felt on every walkway and classroom in our school.”

School counselors, psychologists and school social workers are available to meet with students who need support throughout the school day on Friday, Castillo-Rose said.
