At least three members of the Henrico School Board intend to seek re-election to new four-year terms later this year, but one will not.

Current chairperson Kristi Kinsella (Brookland District) and vice chair Alicia Atkins (Varina District) will seek second terms in the November general election, as will immediate past chair Marcie Shea (Tuckahoe District). All three confirmed their decisions to the Citizen recently. Kinsella, Atkins and Shea each joined the board in 2020, following election in 2019 to seats that had been vacated by incumbents.

Three Chopt District board member Micky Ogburn, however, will not seek re-election after nine years on the board. Ogburn came under fire in early 2021 after sharing, then deleting, an offensive social media post on her personal Facebook page – something for which she subsequently apologized profusely, saying she had not read the entire post before sharing it. The incident prompted her to resign as board chair.

Fairfield District representative Roscoe D. Cooper, III, did not respond to a request for comment about his plans.

Elections for school board members will be held as part of the November general election, which will take place this year on Nov. 7.

Atkins announced in December that she would launch her re-election campaign Jan. 14 with an event at the Varina Area Library. She is an alum of Highland Springs High School and a mother of three and is first Black person and first woman to represent the Varina District on the board. Earlier this month, she became the first Black woman elected to a leadership position on the board.

Kinsella and Shea told the Citizen that they are seeking re-election, though neither has made a public announcement yet.

Michelle Ogburn, the school board representative for the Three Chopt area, said that she will not be running for re-election after serving on the school board for nine years.

The current school board members’ terms will end Dec. 31.
