A record-breaking 25 animals found their permanent homes during a special holiday adoption event hosted by the Henrico County Police Division Dec. 14. The "Fixin' to go Home for the Holidays" event saw cats, dogs, and even a rabbit adopted from the Henrico Police Animal Shelter, while an additional six cats and dogs were transferred to local rescue groups.
The adoption drive, held in partnership with Furbish Thrift, the Henrico Humane Society, and the William A. Harrison Jr. Foundation, aimed to place as many animals as possible in homes before the holidays. The organizations worked together to sponsor adoption fees and provide vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries for the animals, making them more readily available for adoption.
“This record number represents a significant portion of the total adoptable population in our shelter who are now in their new homes or a step closer to finding their forever families,” said Henrico County Police Division Animal Protection Unit Captain G. Greene. “This is a great example of what can be achieved when the police and the community work together!”
The event represented a significant increase in adoptions compared to the usual one or two animals adopted on a typical Saturday.
