COVID

Editor's note: This article has been updated to reflect the addition of a positive COVID-19 case reported at Seven Pines Elementary School Sept. 4 and to reflect a change in one earlier reported case at Fair Oaks Elementary School (see explanation within the article).

Twenty-two Henrico County public schools now have reported at least one COVID-19 case since Aug. 12, with 12 schools reporting a total of 15 cases this month, according to the school system.

In September, three schools have reported cases on multiple days – Fair Oaks Elementary School (Sept. 5 and Sept. 17), Deep Run High School (Sept. 3 and 10) and Wilder Middle School (Sept. 9 and 21).

Three other schools that reported cases this month (Twin Hickory Elementary, Sept. 6; Rolfe Middle, Sept. 7; and Freeman High, Sept. 16), previously had reported cases in August.

In total, 29 separate cases have been confirmed at the 22 schools since Aug. 12. All but one of the cases in September occurred among school system employees, according to HCPS spokesman Andy Jenks. The other involved a visitor to Pinchbeck Elementary Sept. 16 who later tested positive and was in close contact with a school employee.

(An earlier version of this article indicated, according to Henrico Schools officials, that a student at the Henrico Education Foundation's child care program at Fair Oaks Elementary School had tested positive, but HEF President Mike Taylor told the Citizen that although the child's parent tested positive, the child tested negative. The parent had not entered the school facility and had no contact with anyone there aside from the child, who is quarantining for 14 days as a result.)

Only the Aug. 12 case at Varina High School required the closure of a school for a several-day period, since other employees had been in close contact with the worker who tested positive.
