A 20-year-old Henrico man has been identified as the person fatally shot by a Henrico Police officer Wednesday night in Highland Springs.

Malachi Lavar Carroll was shot by an officer shortly after 7:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Elsing Green Court. He later died at a hospital.

Police had responded to the home for reports of a domestic incident, and, according to police, when officers arrived, Carroll attempted to assault another person and an officer with a knife. That prompted one officer, identified by police Thursday only as a female who has been with the division since June 2020, to fire. It is unclear how many shots were fired. Also unclear is whether  Carroll lived at the home, though property records show it is owned by someone with the same last name.

The officer has been placed on an administrative assignment, pending an investigation, which is standard procedure following an officer shooting.

The Officer-Involved Investigations Team investigates any discharge of a firearm by a Police Division member, according to Henrico Police officials. The officer's body camera footage is being reviewed, and the division is working with the Henrico Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to analyze the incident.

"This is a difficult situation for all involved, and our team is working hard to determine the facts of what happened last night," said Henrico Police Chief Eric English.

Although the investigation remains active, police have said that it was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.
