An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale rattled much of Henrico's West End and beyond at 5:28 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake was centered at the end of a cul-de-sac on Greenwick Drive in Wyndham, just north of The Dominion Club and near the Chickahominy River, according to the USGS. The agency initially had reported that the quake was centered about 7 kilometers north of Wyndham, just east of The Federal Club in Hanover County.
People throughout Glen Allen and as far away as Lakeside and Richmond reported feeling their homes shake after a loud boom. Throughout neighborhoods, people came out of their homes to see what had happened.
On social media, some area residents said they wondered whether something had exploded or fallen on their homes. Others who have lived through earthquakes said they knew immediately what had caused the incident.
The quake was the 32nd reported of a 2.5-magnitude or greater in the Richmond region since Jan. 1, 2000 and the 13th strongest among those during that time. Most have been centered along the South Anna River south of Louisa.
Three other earthquakes with a 2.5-magnitude or greater have struck in the area near Tuesday's during that time:
• a 2.5-magnitude quake just north of the Rockville Airport Sept. 23, 2019;
• a 2.5-magnitude quake just north of Glen Allen along the Chickhominy River April 29, 2000;
• a 2.6-magnitude quake north of Wyndham, near The Federal Club in Hanover County Nov. 6, 2003.
The strongest earthquake in the region since 2000 was a 5.8-magnitude quake that struck 11 km south-southwest of Mineral.
