An 18-year-old has been indicted by a Henrico grand jury on two charges related to the vehicular crash March 30 that killed Henrico Police Officer Trey Sutton.

Jeffrey Adam Lankford faces involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving charges in connection with the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Wilkinson Road and Chamberlayne Road in Northern Henrico.

In a statement following Monday’s grand jury decision, Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor said that the crash was caused “when a driver ran a red light at excessive speed,” striking the police cruiser Sutton was driving. The crash also severely injured another officer, seated in the front passenger seat, and a civilian in the back seat who the two officers were transporting to the Henrico Jail.

Lankford was released on his own recognizance; his next court date is scheduled for Oct. 26 at 9 a.m.
