The 11-year-old boy shot in an Eastern Henrico apartment complex Sept. 21 is recovering after undergoing spinal surgery to remove bullet fragments.
The boy, Jerome Johnson, was shot at about 10:30 p.m. that day in the Lakefield Mews apartment complex, located just off Gay Avenue not far from Laburnum Avenue near The Shops at White Oak Village. He was believed to have been a random victim of the shooting.
Family friends have established a GoFundMe page for Johnson and his family to help them pay medical bills and find a home that will be suitable for his care and rehabilitation process at https://www.gofundme.com/f/5tkmn-jerome-johnson.
The boy’s family is hopeful that he will walk again. A tube was removed from his chest earlier this week, and he is able to sit up. The boy, a participant in the Henrico Police Athletic League program, will celebrate his 12th birthday this week. He has received care packages from the organization and Richmond Raceway officials.
